Dateline: Cincinnati
The last time the Reds were in St. Louis they were swept in three games there.
Rhett Lowder was battered by the Colorado Rockies in his first start after three decent relief appearances. Lowder was forced back into the rotation because Nick Lodolo developed another blister.
Lowder is 3-7 with a 5.75 ERA in 17 appearances and 14 starts. He allowed one run over seven innings in three relief appearances. The Colorado Rockies scored eight run on Lowder in 2 1/3 innings on 11 hits. It was the second start of the season in which he allowed eight runs. He has another in which six runs crossed the plate.
Lowder pitched five scoreless innings against the Cardinals in 2024. His last start against them was on June 7, his first start off the injured list. He pitched just three innings. The Cardinals did not score and only got one hit but Lowder walked five batters which shortened his stint.
Dustin May, a 28-year old right hander, is 5-7 with a 4.17 ERA in 19 starts.
May was the third round pick of the Los Angeles in 2016 out of Northwest High School in Justin, Texas. The Cardinals signed him as a free agent in December.
He is 0-1 in his last five starts. He has allowed 18 runs over 16 1/3 innings for a 9.92 ERA. His last start on July 18 against the Arizona Diamondbacks was his losing decision. He gave up five runs in five innings on eight hits and four walks. He struck out six.
This will be his first appearance against the Reds.
