Rhett Lowder Takes His Turn To Be A Snake Handler

Rhett Lowder is set to make his second start since his return from the injured list with an aching shoulder.

Lowder, who missed all of 2025, owns a 3-3 record with a 5.01 ERA. The Reds first choice in the 2023 draft made nine starts so far. He has 41 1/3 innings in those starts. He allowed 23 earned runs an has 23 walks. The walks have been a problem for him so far. He has 31 strikeouts and allowed just two home runs to the 182 batters he's faced.

He posted three quality starts among his first five outings through April. May was a nightmare for him. He had two starts in which he allowed 11 runs in 4 1/3 innings with eight walks.

Lowder pitched only three innings in his last outing in St. Louis. He pitched three innings and allowed no runs and just one hit but five walks cut his day short.

The 24-year old will pitch against Arizona for the first time.

The Diamondbacks send 28-year old right hander Mike Soroka to the mound to face Lowder and his mates.

Soroka has seven years on his resume. He was the first round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 2015 draft out of  Bishop Carroll High School in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. He broke in with the Braves at 20 years old against the New York Mets.

He missed the entire 2021 season with injury and made just five Triple A starts in Gwinnett in 2022.

Soroka returned to the big leagues in 2023 and made six starts. Then moved on to the Chicago White Sox organization, then the Washington Nationals to start last season before being a trade deadline acquistion by the Chicago Cubs.

Arizona signed him as a free agent in December. He rewarded them with an 8-3 record with a 3.28 ERA this season. Soroka has three quality starts in his last four outings, including a seven inning, one-run victory over the Nationals in his last start. He allowed just three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Soroka has five appearances with four starts against the Reds, lifetime. He is 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA. He had three appearances last season against the Reds. He made a start with the Nationals on July 23 in Washington. He took a 5-0 loss with 5 2/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits, three walks. He struck out six. He made his next start with the Chicago Cubs on August 4 and lasted just two innings in a 3-2 loss to the Reds. He gave up a home run to Tyler Stephenson and left with an injury. He didn't pitch again until September 15. He pitched a scoreless inning of relief against the Reds on September 18.
