The Reds doubled down behind an effective outing by Andrew Abbott to even the series against the New York Yankees in 10-2 win.
The Reds hit seven doubles in the game to rout the Yankees. Sal Stewart had two of them and drove in a total of six runs for the second time this season.
Abbott got off to a slow start when old nemisis from the National League Paul Goldschmidt hit his 12th home run of the season, two outs into the first inning.
Yankees starter Will Warren had a fast start, striking out the side in the first inning. The Reds wasted a leadoff double by Nathaniel Lowe in the second inning.
Edwin Arroyo doubled with one out in the third. Warren walked Blake Dunn. JJ Bleday lined out. Sal Stewart doubled to put the Reds in the lead.
Abbott gave up one hit through the fourth inning. He walked Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez both stole a base but Abbott picked Dominguez off second in the second inning.
The Reds separated from the Bronx Bombers in the fifth. Arroyo reached on first baseman Ben Rice’s error. He missed catching the throw from Volpe. Dunn hit a hard ground ball to Volpe at short but beat the relay on an attempted double play. Bleday doubled with Dunn stopping at third. Stewart hit a fly to left to score Dunn. Spencer Steer unloaded his 12th home run to put the Yanks out of slam range. Steer has three hits in his last 43 at bats. All of them home runs.
“I’m glad Sal got the RBI. It lets me brag on him a little bit but guys getting on base allowed him to do that,” Francona said. “Dunn beating out the ball getting down the line. You don’t think about it at the time but it was huge.”
Abbott got into trouble in the fifth. With one out, Volpe and Ali Sanchez singled. Amed Rosario walked to load the bases with two outs. Abbott went 3-2 on Goldschmidt and struck him out looking over Goldschmidt’s challenge to end the inning.
Abbott started the sixth but Cody Belanger and Dominguez singled. Terry Francona summoned Tejay Antone, who got out of the inning to preserve the lead.
Abbott pitched five innings with one run allowed on five hits. He walked three and struck out six.
Antone came back out for a scoreless seventh inning.
“That was big,” Francona said. “ You’re wondering whether you’re going to run through your bullpen and he gets through it with not a lot of pitches.”
The Reds poured it on Ryan Yarbrough in the eighth inning. McLain singled and was forced at second by Jose Trevino. Arroyo, who had the first four -hit game of his career, singled. Dunn singled to load the bases. Stewart cleared the bases with his second double and scored when pinch hitter Dane Myers belted a double off the left field wall.
Myers has eight pinch hits to lead MLB.
The Reds seven doubles of the 15 hits against the Yankees, Lowe, Bleday, Arroyo, Marte, Myers and Stewart hit two. Steee hit a home run for a total of eight extra base hits.
