The Reds had to give up on a pitching prospect to roster needs.
Kyle Nicolas was sent to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations.
The Reds had to remove Nicolas on the 40-man roster when the Reds needed a roster spot for Lyon Richardson to replace Pierce Johnson on May 30.
The irony is that Richardson was also designated for assignment with Yunior Marte to put Zach McCambley on the roster.
Nicolas appeared in seven games for the Reds. He had a 1-0 record and an 8.59 ERA. His problem was walks. He walked 13 batters in 7 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits.
The Reds hoped his strong arm could be harnessed when they sent Tyler Callihan to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
That experiment ended today.
Nicolas also allowed 17 hits and 17 walks in 15 2/3 innings over 14 games.
