Chris Paddack arrived in the Reds' clubhouse with a shirt, tie and cowboy hat. His nickname is "The Sherrif". When he was with the San Diego Padres when he was teammates with current Reds, Emilio Pagan and Pierce Johnson. San Diego fans had a section called "Paddack's Posse."
Paddack will make his first start as a Red against the Cleveland Guardians in the second game of this weekend series.
He was signed by the Reds on Wednesday (May 13, 2026). The Reds placed Rhett Lowder on the injured list.
Paddack was released by the Miami Marlins on May 10 and has not pitched in 11 days.
"We are going to keep a close eye on him. He had a good bullpen but DJ is going to keep checking on him every inning," Terry Francona said.
Paddack's last start was on May 3 against the Philadelphia Phillies, in which he pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out one. The outing left him with an 0-5 record and a 7.63 ERA.
His best season was his rookie year in 2019. His record was 9-7 with a 3.33 ERA.
Paddack faced Cleveland four times in his career, three starts. He holds a 0-1 record and a 2.41 ERA. The last time he faced them, he started a game against them he pitched 5 1/3 innings as a member of the Minnesota Twins on May 21, last season. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Paddack pitched 1/3 an inning as a member of the Detroit Tigers in September with one strikeout.
The Reds will face left handed, Joey Cantillo, who was switched late Friday night with Gavin Williams, who will start on Sunday.
Cantillo like Paddack has history in San Diego. The 26-year old was drafted by the Padres with their 16th pick in the 2017 draft from Kailua High School in Hawaii.
He was traded to Cleveland in August of 2020 for Mike Clevenger, Greg Allen and Matt Waldron. The Indians got Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges in the deal.
Cantillo broke in with Cleveland in 2024. He is 3-1 this season with a 2.98 ERA in nine starts. His last was on May 11. He pitched six scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels, on five hits and a walk. He struck out four.
"We've been looking for a while now to get somebody between Tanner (Bibee) and Gavin (Williams)," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "We kind of split them up. We've been talking about that since early in the year. The last off day and the way Joey pitched on Sunday, being efficient, it felt like it was the right time to make that switch."
It will be Cantillo's first start against the Reds. He did face them in relief last May 17. He faced one batter and struck out last season's Most Outstanding Player in the Ohio Cup, Will Benson.
