Jose Trevino had an injection to help out with a bulging disk in his back. Trevino is on the 10-day injured list as of April 5.

"They think it will help him heal. It's treatable," manager Terry Francona said. "He won't do anything today. If he feels better tomorrow, he will start to kind of ramp up."

Nick Lodolo threw a bullpen yesterday.

"He is starting to grow a callous, which is good," Francona said. "They are just balancing, trying to get him to balance throwing without going too far. It's not the easiest thing to do. He will throw another side on Sunday."

Caleb Ferguson is nursing a strained right oblique. He will also throw a side on Sunday. "I think the next thing is he will face hitters on Tuesday," Francona said.

The Reds optioned Jose Franco to Triple A Louisville. The Reds promoted RHP Kyle Nicolas, who they obtained from Pittsburgh for Tyler Callihan during spring training. Nicolas played in the World Baseball Classic for Italy and only appeared in one Cactus League game. He walked four batters and the Reds didn't get a good look at him.

"I talked to PK (Louisville manager Pat Kelly) today. He told me he was filling the strike zone pretty good. When he does that, he'll be alright," Francona said.

"Some send downs are hard," Francona said. "We told him, he didn't do anything wrong. The way we used him in Miami, he would have been down this whole series, anyway. He needs to start. The plan is for him to start Wednesday in Louisville. He is a kid that essentially came out of Double A. I think he understood. He handled himself very well."
