Brandon Williamson left the game after three innings on Wednesday with left shoulder fatigue. He misse d 15 months with elbow surgery.
The left hander had an MRI this morning then received a cortisone injection.
Zach Maxwell joins the team from Triple A Louisville.
Williamson was the losing pitcher in the Colorado Rockies 13-2 win. He allowed four runs in three innings and walked four. He gave up four hits. Williamson was 2-3 with a 6.11 ERA in six starts.
The Reds are also missing Nick Lodolo, who will make another rehab start before he is ready and Hunter Greene had bone chips removed from his right elbow in March. He is expected to return in July.
Maxwell known as "Big Sugar" pitched in 12 games in relief at Louisville with a 1-0 record and a 5.91 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. He walked eight and struck out 17.
