Sean Marshall Gets Stem Cell Injection To Rebuild Left Shoulder

Sean Marshall the Reds' big left-handed relief pitcher is having work done on his left shoulder that has limited his appearances over the last two seasons.

Marshall pitched just 14 innings over 15 games this season after a 2013 campaign in which he appeared in just 16 games covering 10 1/3 innings.

The Reds took cells from the area of his tailbone and injected them into his left shoulder, hoping that the cells will reproduce as healthy muscle in his left shoulder.

Marshall and the Reds' medical staff headed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek discussed the use of stem cells after exploratory surgery to see what the damage was in the pitcher's shoulder.

"We're going to give it a try," Marshall said before the Reds took the field against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.  "This is pretty new. I'm excited about the outlook."

The comeback is likely to take as long as it would have if surgery was performed.

"I will start throwing in the early off-season," Marshall said. "It is a lengthy process for cells to regenerate."
