Ryan Ludwick played firstbase when he was five years old, which would be 1983..
"I was the best at catching the ball," Ludwick said. "I was a centerfielder ever since then until I broke my hip, then I moved to the corner. I played outfield all my life and pitched."
Ludwick ordered a firstbaseman's mit which he will use to work on a new position.

"He is one of my favorite coaches of all-time," Ludwick said. "I worked at firstbase with him every day. It was Buddy's idea. He told me that as I got older that would help my career and make me more valuable the more positions I can play. It is a late start but can't hurt."
Ludwick's lack of experience is so limited he is not sure of the challenges he will face in learning the position.
"I was too athletic to play firstbase, so I don't know," Ludwick said. "I told Jay (Bruce) last night. 'You look the part.' He said, "What does that mean/""
