Draft Full of the Sons of Former Reds

Dante Bichette Jr. was taken by the New York Yankees with its first pick in the draft (51st).  Dante Bichette Sr. played for the Reds for most of the 2000 season before he was traded to Boston for Chris Reitsma.

C.J. McElroy an outfielder was taken by St. Louis.  His father Chuck was a lefthanded reliever for the Reds in 1994, 95 and part of 1996.

Jack Armstrong a RHP from Vanderbilt was taken by Houston with the 99th pick in the draft.  His father Jack Armstrong was the pitcher that got off to the hot start for the Reds in the 1990 wire-to-wire World Championship season.  The elder Jack Armstrong was the Reds first pick out of Rider College in 1987 and made his debut the next season.  He was 11-3 at the All-Star break in 1990 and pitched for the National League in classic at Wrigley Field.  He won one game in the second half of the season, finishing 12-9.  The next season he was 7-13 in 1991, then traded to Cleveland for Greg Swindel in November 1991.

The son of another member of that World Championship team, Daniel Oliver, a RHP from Florida State University was selected by the Florida Marlins in the eighth round.  His father was catcher, Joe Oliver.  Joe Oliver was drafted by Cincinnati in the second round in 1983 out of William R. Boone High Scholl in Orlando, Florida.  Oliver played for the Reds from his debut season in 1989 through 1994.  After one season in Milwaukee, Oliver caught for the Reds in 1996-97.  He finished with a 13-year career, hitting .247 in 1,076 games with 102 home runs and 476 RBI and oh yes, 13 stolen bases.

Daniel Lockhart was the Chicago Cubs 10th pick.  His father Keith did not play for the Reds but was drafted by Cincinnati in the 11th round in 1986 out of Oral Roberts University.  His contract was purchased by the Oakland Athletics before the 1992 season but he played in the Reds system with most to the members of the 1990 team.  He broke in with the San Diego Padres in 1994.  Lockhart played 10 season with the Padres, Royals and Braves.  His son Dan was taken as a shortstop from the Hebron Christian Academy in Georgia.

The Cubs also drafted the son of National Hockey League Hall of Famer, Wayne Gretzky.  Trevor Gretzky was taken by the Cubs in the seventh round out of Oak Hills Christian High School in California.  Gretzky is a lefthanded hitting firstbaseman.

The Cubs took Shawon Dunston Jr,. the son of their former number one pick, in the 11th round.  Dunston Sr was the Cubs first pick in the 1982 and the first overall pick out of Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, New York.  He had an 18-year major league career 1,597 hits and .269 batting average.  Dunston Jr. is a center fielder from Valley Christian High School in California.
