Hunter Greene felt his groin tighten on the last two pitches of the fifth and final inning against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

Greene had an MRI at 10:00 am but the Reds had already decided to put him on the 15-day IL.

“We stayed here for a while last night. We talked to him (Greene). We talked to trainers. Since it happened once and now this is twice. We have to figure this thing out. There were others like his lower back. We have to see if it’s related. The decision was easy without the MRI,” Terry Francona said.

Veteran Wade Miley who could have elected free agency.

“He had the right to free agency. We know he talked to several teams,” Francona said. “He and Nick (general manager Nick Krall) talked multiple times. I went to Wade and I know how much he appreciated Nick’s honesty. We’re going to have him in the bullpen. We knew at some point we’d probably need him. It happened a little quicker.  He will be in the bullpen today. If he’s used…good. If he’s not he’ll pitch the first day in Cleveland and we’ll put him in the rotation.”

Miley is ready after four months of grueling rehab.

“I think that might have been a little bit of the plan all along. I wasn’t going to be able to be utilized Sunday, Monday, Tuesday anyway because I threw on Friday. Appreciative of the way the Reds organization handled it. We always stayed in touch,” Miley said.

How’s he been throwing?

“Some good, some shitty. I felt good. I was chasing, trying to get to a certain pitch-count, certain innings limit,” Miley said. “There were times it was tough to get ready, tough to get motivated. But it’s great to be back. I feel healthy.”

Even though Miley’s stuff is not up to par, he finds a way to compete.

“He was in full uni at 8:30 this morning. I thought I was the only one here,” Francona said. “It is really welcomed. There is no getting around it. He’s a bright light, man. I put a lot of faith in his ability to compete. When his stuff isn’t where he wants it he figures out a way. He won’t short change you on competing.”
