Corbin Burnes will have "Tommy John" surgery next week. The recovery time is typically 12-18 months. The procedure will be done next week by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
Burnes, who signed the biggest free agent contract in Diamondbacks history over the offseason at six years and $210 million, exited Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals with right elbow discomfort.
"The news isn't great," Arizona Torey Lovullo said. "It was a lot of fast moving information, a lot of people weighing in on this. Corbin felt this was the best decision for him to keep pushing forward."
Burnes commented that his elbow would probably require surgery, even though he never had elbow problems before.
"We were hoping it was a knee jerk reaction. I heard the comments when he came off the mound but it's real. It is a long road. He is going to be great for the Arizona Diamondback. I'm convinced of it. We are all with him," Lovullo continued. "Corbin seamed to be at peace with it. No pitcher wants to go through this but he understands why it happens and what he has to do."
