Local Pitcher Miami Grad Named Pitcher Of The Week In The FSL





LHP Seth Varner a 2011 graduate of Clermont Northeast High School and Miami University was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week.

The Reds selected the 23-year old in the 10th round of the 2014 draft.  Varner, who was named to the Southern Buckeye Conference Player of the Year, was the first Miami player named Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2014.

Varner split  the season between Low A Dayton and High A Daytona after turning in a 4-3 record in 13 games, including a start at Billings last season.  This year he was 7-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 14 starts with the Dragons before he was promoted to the Tortugas, where he was 4-4 with a 2.97 ERA in nine starts.

The 6'3" 225 lb., Varner took a perfect game, no-hitter into the seventh inning against Brevard County on Sunday until Clint Coulter singled up the middle with two outs in the seventh.  Varner has not allowed a run in his last 19 innings heading into the playoffs which begins Tuesday against the Phillies' Clearwater Threshers.

Varner was 3-1 with a 2.17 ERA since the beginning of August. The Batavia, Ohio native made four relief appearances in addition to three starts in the month.
