Cincinnati scored on its first two possessions but Pittsburgh settled in and fought hard to get back into the game in the second half.
Quarterback Tino Sunseri's pass on a first and goal from the two-yardline as time expired ended its best scoring threat. Actually Pitt was in the Cincinnati red zone twice but a Sunseri pass was intercepted by Pittsburgh native, Greg Blair, who transferred to Cincinnati from Lackawanna Community College.
The Bearcats with Ralph David Abernathy IV and Munchie Legaux teaming up on a 25-yard pass play midway through the second quarter moved deep into Pittsburgh territory but a sack forced the Bearcats to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Tony Miliano.
The Bearcats held a slight 220-206 advantage in yards gained. Pittsburgh ran 44 plays on offense to the Bearcat's 28 plays.
Reds' outfielders Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs were present on the UC sideline.
