Dateline: Cincinnati

The Red re-instated left hander Caleb Ferguson from the 15-day injured list. He had been shelved with a strained right oblique since spring training.

They also promoted Zach "Big Sugar" Maxwell from Triple A Louisville.

Cincinnati optioned Jose Franco, who pitched two innings in the first game allowing three runs on two hits and a walk. He gave up the first career home run to Bryan Torres.

Connor Phillips was also sent down after giving up a two-run home run to Jordan Walker in the first game.

"He (Phillips) is not throwing enough strikes. We're trying like crazy to work with him on the running game and things like that. He's blessed with a really good arm and can spin it. Until he starts throwing the ball where he wants to. It cam be a struggle. The other day did great. He's got to follow that up and be more consistent," Terry Francona said.

Ferguson was supposed to pitch the second game in Louisville after his scheduled Friday appearance was rained out. The Reds changed their mind after the first game against the Cardinals.

Ferguson a 29-year old from West Jefferson, Ohio was acquired by the Reds as a free agent in September. He pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Seattle Mariners last season. He was 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA. He appeared in the ALDS and the ALCS for Seattle last season. Ferguson did not appear in a Cactus League game this spring.

Maxwell pitched one inning and gave up four runs on three hits, two homers and two walks in he call up on May 1 at Pittsburgh. In Louisville, Maxwell pitched in 17 games with a 2-0 record and two saves with an ERA of 3.50.
